Where do we come from? Many may not know the answer to their family tree or the history of where their family story began, and that’s okay.

At this leadership meet-and-greet, we will have a NEXTGEN Ambassador of Oklahoma to help you discover ways to get involved and feel inspired to be part of the state.

We’re all connected — but how?

The fascinating thing about genealogy is that, regardless of knowing the bloodline from generation to generation, there is the beauty of epigenetics. Epigenetics is the study of changes in gene expression or cellular phenotype that do not involve changes to the underlying DNA sequence.

It helps us feel connected to our ancestors, even without having met them.

Save the date and stay tuned for some wonderful storytelling, interactive sessions, and a chance to meet some of Oklahoma's influential figures who are making a difference for generations to come.

Epigenetics refers to the study of changes in gene expression or cellular function that do not involve alterations to the DNA sequence itself. Essentially, it is the study of how environmental factors, lifestyle, and experiences can affect how genes are turned on or off, influencing traits and behaviors. These changes can sometimes be passed down from one generation to the next, even though the DNA sequence remains unchanged.

In simple terms, epigenetics shows how your environment and life experiences can impact your genes and how those changes can be inherited by future generations.

Feeling connected is essential for several reasons, both for our mental well-being and our sense of belonging. Here’s why it’s so important:

  1. Sense of Belonging: Feeling connected to others—whether through family, community, or shared experiences—creates a sense of belonging. This helps us feel valued and understood, which is fundamental for our emotional health.

  2. Mental Health: Connection with others has a direct impact on our mental health. Strong relationships can reduce feelings of loneliness, depression, and anxiety. Being connected provides support during tough times and allows for shared joy during good times.

  3. Identity and Purpose: Understanding where we come from, whether through family, heritage, or community, helps form our sense of identity. Feeling connected to our past, culture, or others can give us a deeper sense of purpose and meaning in life.

  4. Increased Resilience: Connectedness strengthens resilience. When we feel supported and part of something bigger than ourselves, we are more likely to overcome challenges and setbacks.

  5. Encourages Growth: Relationships and connections with others can encourage personal growth. Through connections, we learn from others, share experiences, and gain new perspectives, helping us evolve and become more empathetic.

  6. Well-Being and Happiness: Studies show that people who feel connected to others are generally happier and experience a higher level of life satisfaction. Social connections enhance our well-being by providing joy, companionship, and a sense of purpose.

  7. Cultural Continuity: Feeling connected to cultural or familial roots can help preserve traditions, stories, and values. It allows us to carry forward the wisdom and lessons of our ancestors, ensuring that their legacy continues for future generations.
